Inspiring healthy habits

”Motivation is what gets you started, habit is what keeps you going.”
That was the key message from GV Health Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) Hayley Napier when discussing Exercise Right Week.
The week, which starts on Monday, aims to celebrate and promote exercise for people with a range of different health conditions, as well as educating the community on the role of AEPs.
AEPs use exercise to help people manage their chronic health conditions to improve their overall wellbeing and lifestyle.
They also assist in effecting overall behaviour change, goal setting and helping maintain long term healthy habits.
AEP Michelle McIntosh, who recently started work at GV Health, said while motivation was a good thing to have, it was not the most important.
“You need to be consistent,” she said.
"But developing healthy habits are what keep you going.”
Ms Napier and Ms McIntosh suggested the following tips to help stay motivated and develop those habits:
- Exercise with family or friends
- Do something you enjoy
- Start small and gradually build up; for example starting off with a five-minute walk
- Set a goal that’s meaningful to you; for example improving fitness to play with your kids
GV Health’s AEPs will be running several activities within the hospital, including a daily 20 minute walk for those who are looking to begin developing new exercise habits.
“This is a great opportunity for people with questions to come along and get more information,” Ms Napier said.
“We’ll be sharing plenty of tips that people can implement to make a difference to their health.”
