GV Health receives state budget funding

Goulburn Valley Health chief executive Matt Sharp has welcomed planning funding to progress stage two of the hospital's Graham Street redevelopment.
The $2 million was pledged in the Victorian Government’s budget and was in addition to the $170 million investment already announced for stage one.
Mr Sharp said the funding ensured important planning happened on the Shepparton site.
‘‘This will allow important preparations to occur to ensure we use the available space on the site as effectively as possible taking into consideration stage one of the redevelopment funded by the State Government which is currently under way,’’ he said.
‘‘This will also ensure we effectively plan for the location of the integrated cancer centre following the recent funding announcement by the Australian Government.
‘‘Goulburn Valley Health will continue to work closely with both levels of government to improve access to health services for people across the Goulburn Valley.”
Victorian Member for Shepparton Suzanna Sheed welcomed the funding and said stage two was ‘‘desperately needed’’ to ensure the community had better access to health facilities in the local region.
‘‘For too many years Shepparton languished behind the other large regional centres,’’ she said.
‘‘Stage one of the GV Health redevelopment went some way to rectifying the situation.
‘‘Stage two will place us on an even footing with comparable regions such as Bendigo, Ballarat and Geelong.’’
Ms Sheed said cancer and mental health services were vital moving forward.
‘‘For years, mental health has been the poor relation in the health system,’’ she said.
‘‘With the Royal Commission now under way there can be little doubt that it will recommend significant investment in this important area and we will want to be in a position to take advantage of that.’’
