The small town of Wunghnu will rally around a friend, a mother and family member tomorrow night to raise funds for the Peter Copulos Cancer and Wellness Centre.
Numurkah’s Judy Arnold was diagnosed with breast cancer in February and is undergoing chemotherapy in Shepparton, before heading to Melbourne for radiotherapy.
Wunghnu Tavern publican Trish Milne, who has known Mrs Arnold for more than five years, did not want her friend to lose her hair alone.
‘‘She was worried about losing her hair and I said to her, ‘don’t worry Jude, if you lose your hair, I’ll shave mine off, too’,’’ Ms Milne said.
From there, Ms Milne said more than 10 people volunteered to lose their locks, including Mrs Arnold’s daughter Emma.
‘‘When I found out that Judy had to go to Melbourne for the next part of her treatment, that inspired me more to do something and with all these volunteers we thought let’s do it for a cause,’’ she said.
‘‘We hope that in the future Shepparton will be a one-stop-shop for all cancer treatments so patients don’t have to leave the area for treatment,’’ Ms Milne said.
She said there would be plenty of entertainment with musicians putting their hands up for the cause, including tavern regulars James Moore, Michael Hogan and Terry Gray.
Overwhelmed by the support, Mrs Arnold said everyone involved knew of someone who had had to travel for cancer treatment in Wodonga, Melbourne or Bendigo.
‘‘I’ve been lucky enough that all of my treatment to date has been in Shepparton, it’s just a shame that the next hurdle everyone has to go through isn’t available in Shepparton,’’ she said.
Her last chemotherapy treatment is on July 4, then radiotherapy would start three to four weeks after that.
‘‘Five days, for five weeks, for 15 minutes a day. But we’re the lucky ones, we’ve got a daughter that lives 20 minutes from Sunshine,’’ she said.
‘‘This fundraiser is to make a change for future patients.’’
The Wunghnu Tavern charity shave is on tomorrow from 6pm at the Wunghnu Tavern, 27 Carlisle St, Wunghnu. For information, phone 5862 2965.
