May Day raises funds for maternity ward

Goulburn Valley Health’s maternity ward received a generous boost this week thanks to the annual May Day event.
The luncheon, celebrated around Mother’s Day each year, was held at Billabong Garden Complex’s cafe with guest speakers Narelle Pell and Kathy Fuller.
The pair shared an incredible journey together last year when they ran 12 marathons across 12 locations in 12 months, raising money for the Goulburn Valley Centre Against Sexual Assault.
GV Health Foundation chairperson Carmel Johnson said it was lovely to see so many people attend the lunch and said it was a chance to celebrate the achievements of Ms Pell and Ms Fuller.
‘‘It has been a wonderful year for the Foundation working with these women,’’ she said.
The pair spoke about the motivation behind the idea to run the marathons.
‘‘We really wanted to do something for our community,’’ Ms Fuller said.
‘‘Our statistics (around child abuse) in Australia are really alarming,’’ Ms Pell added.
The women were determined to ensure children in the region were educated and new the signs to look out for.
‘‘We wanted our community to be the safest place to raise a child,’’ Ms Pell said.
The luncheon was completed with lucky door and raffle prizes.
