Kids sink teeth into oral hygiene matters

There were plenty of healthy smiles St Mary’s Primary School in Mooroopna on Friday.
Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students were visited by Goulburn Valley Dental Group staff to learn the basics of oral hygiene.
‘‘We are running our GV Healthy Smiles program where we talk about prevention of disease in teeth, healthy eating, reducing sugar intake, brushing and oral hygiene,’’ oral health therapist Amy Johnson said.
Students took part in a range of activities to make them more aware of the impact food and drink can have on their teeth.
Students guessed the amount of sugar in everyday drinks, learned proper brushing techniques and were taught to think about their foods as everyday or sometimes items.
Ms Johnson said the program travelled to a number of primary schools in the area to reinforce the message of dental health.
‘‘The aim is early intervention and making sure kids feel comfortable when they do go to the dentist,’’ she said.
‘‘Next year we are hoping to visit more schools in the area to ensure more students can get involved.’’
