Inspiring healthy habits

”Motivation is what gets you started, habit is what keeps you going,” says GV Health Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) Hayley Napier.
Exercise Right Week, which starts on Monday, aims to celebrate and promote exercise for people with a range of different health conditions, as well as educating the community on the role of AEPs.
AEPs use exercise to help people manage their chronic health conditions to improve their overall wellbeing and lifestyle. They also assist in effecting overall behaviour change, goal setting and helping maintain long term healthy habits.
AEP Michelle McIntosh, who recently started work at GV Health, says that while motivation is a good thing to have, it’s not the most important.
“You need to be consistent,” she says. But developing healthy habits are what keep you going.”
Ms Napier and Ms Mcintosh suggest the following tips to help stay motivated and develop those habits:
Exercise with family or friends
Do something you enjoy.
Start small and gradually build up. Start with a 5 minute walk…
- Set a goal that’s meaningful to you. E.g. “Improving my fitness so I can play with my kids.”
GV Health’s AEPs will be running several activities within the hospital, including a daily 20 minute walk for those who are looking to begin developing new exercise habits.
“This is a great opportunity for people with questions to come along and get more information,” says Ms Napier. “We’ll be sharing plenty of tips that people can implement to make a difference to their health.”
