CSSD cleans up with next gen upgrade
With two decades of experience in the medical field to their names individually, GV Health CSSD Manager Jeannete Ryan and GV Health Peri-operative Services Manager Andrea Stevens are delighted with the recent $650,000 equipment upgrade in their department.
“The old equipment was 20 years old,” explains Ms Stevens. “This new equipment is going to make us more efficient. It’s going to lead to quicker throughput and reduced turnaround times.”
Crucial to the efficient running of the hospital, the CSSD is responsible for sterilising and preparing instruments for operating theatres and other patient related procedures. The area handles the sterile goods and equipment used in all patient care areas within GV Health.
“Over the last six weeks, the CSSD team have been moved to a completely different area,” says Ms Stevens. “What they’ve done in that six weeks is amazing - we’ve put the plans in place, but they’ve made it happen, they’ve really embraced it.”
The Belimed Sterilisers and Washers purchased from Gallay Medical and Scientific mean the benefits to consumers will be experienced immediately.
“Shorter turnaround times mean more patients can be added to the elective list,” says Ms Ryan. “Originally we were asked to do this upgrade with two theatres operating, but we’ve actually done this with full operation. That’s pretty big.”
Comprised of 15 staff, the GV Health CSSD team includes six Grade 3 Instrument Technicians. The entire team are currently upgrading their skills for new qualifications in October.
“We’re planning on implementing new processes before they’re mandatory in 2020,” says Ms Stevens. “We’re ahead of the game – the changing processes are producing greater results – you’ve got to keep thinking about the bigger picture.”
As part of stage one of the GV Health redevelopment, the new upgrades mean the team are now even better placed to support the organisation’s operational needs.
“There are staff that have been here for over 30 years,” says Ms Ryan. “They’ve been waiting a long time to see this happen. It’s just awesome!”
